The world’s largest pimple is said to be 76 mm in diameter. There are even claims on the Web of even bigger zits. But many of the so-called super size zits on the Net are actually about 18 mm in diameter. That is about the size of a dime.
What Causes Big Zits?
Zits 76 mm in diameter are as big as your typical hockey puck. It is possible that these extra large zits are symptoms of another skin condition. They may not even be zits at all. It should be stated here that not all scientists believe in the claims of 76 mm or 18 mm zits. The biggest currently accepted scientifically is 5 mm in diameter.
Acne
Although the claims for the world’s largest pimple is disputed, there is no questioning the fact that many people suffer from large zits. Those who suffer from this skin ailment are likely afflicted with acne.
Scientifically known as acne vulgaris, it is a cystic bump with fluids inside. Usually, the cyst or nodule appears under the surface of the skin. This can make it hard to see.
Zits usually pop up when there is a skin pore blockage. It can appear as a pustule or papule. As stated earlier, these can appear in different sizes. They usually manifest at the onset of puberty. Although common among teens, people in their 20s, 30s and beyond can get them too.
The sebaceous glands generate the skin’s sebum. Usually, the outer layer of the skin shed and some dead skin cells are left. Often during puberty, the sebum will make the dead skin cells come together. This can lead to pore blockage. Though there is blockage, the glands will still generate sebum. If bacteria or other triggers set in, the zits will pop up.
Prevention and Treatment of Zits
The best way to keep acne away is to keep the face clean. Some dermatologists also suggest avoiding perfumed soaps as they can exacerbate the problem. There are also OTC medications available. These include tetracycline, erythromycin and isotretinoin. Many other treatments are being marketed today. Most of them appear in gel or cream.
The size of the world’s largest pimple may still be subject to debate. But there is no debating the fact that steps can be taken to prevent or reduce their occurrence. By keeping your face clean or taking medications, these unsightly zits can be removed.
