What is the Size of an Aquarium?
Whether one intends to keep their pet fish in a simple glass bowl or in a big fish tank, it is always important to consider what is the size of an aquarium. Naturally, an aquarium should be big enough to comfortably accommodate however many fish it can, but other vital considerations include how much water it can hold and how much it weighs once it has been filled (its filled weight).
The various basic aquarium sizes are as follows (take note that the weights apply to glass aquariums, as acrylic aquariums tend to weigh less): for small aquariums, those with a tank size of 2 1/2 gallons measure 12 inches (length) x 6 inches (width) x 8 inches (height) and have a filled weight of 27 pounds. A 5-gallon aquarium measures 16 x 8 x 10 inches and has a filled weight of 62 pounds. A 10-gallon aquarium, or the “Leader,” measures 20 x 10 x 12 inches and will weigh 111 pounds once filled. A 15-gallon fish tank measures 24 x 12 x 12 inches and weighs 170 pounds when filled. A 15-gallon High tank measures 20 x 10 x 18 inches and also weighs 170 pounds.
For mid-sized aquariums, the measurements of a 20-gallon High fish tank are 24 x 12 x 16 inches, with a filled weight of 225 pounds. A 20-gallon Long aquarium measures 30 x 12 x 12 inches and similarly has a filled weight of 225 pounds. A 25-gallon aquarium measures 24 x 12 x 20 inches and has a filled weight of 282 pounds. A 29-gallon tank is 30 x 12 x 18 inches and weighs 330 pounds when full. A 30-gallon Breeder aquarium is 36 x 18 x 12 inches, with a filled weight of 348 pounds. A 40-gallon breeder measures 36 x 18 x 16 inches and has a filled weight of 458 pounds. A 40-gallon Long aquarium measures 48 x 12 x 16 inches and has a filled weight of 455 pounds.
For large aquariums, one with a 50-gallon tank size would measure 36 x 18 x 19 pounds and have a filled weight of 600 pounds. A 55-gallon aquarium measures 48 x 13 x 21 inches and weighs 625 pounds. A 65-gallon fish tank would measure 35 x 18 x 24 inches and have a filled weight of 772 pounds. A 75-gallon tank’s measurements are 48 x 18 x 21 inches, with a filled weight of 850 pounds. A 90-gallon aquarium measures 48 x 18 x 24 inches and weighs 1050 pounds when filled. A 125-gallon tank measures 72 x 18 x 21 inches and has a filled weight of 1400 pounds. A 150-gallon tank measures 72 x 18 x 28 inches and weighs 1800 pounds when full. Finally, a 180-gallon aquarium’s measurements would be 72 x 24 x 25 inches, and its filled weight would be 2100 pounds.
