What is the Size of a Basting Brush?
The size of a basting brush or pastry brush varies depending on the manufacturer. The Weber 6432 silicone basting brush measures 13.2 x 2.5 x 1.8 inches and is made of stainless steel. The Mario Batali basting brush on the other hand, measures 9-1/2 x 2 x 1/2 inches. Other manufacturers will use other sizes.
Purpose and Features
The basting brush is a cooking utility. Its purpose is to apply glaze on food or oil. The typical pastry brush is made of fibers a lot like those in a paint brush. The bristles are often made of nylon or plastic.
There are also some kitchen brushes fitted with bristles made of silicone. The basting brush is used frequently for applying egg wash or glaze on pastries. The size of a basting brush determines how easy it will be to apply the glaze.
The glaze is applied to the food surface. The pastry brush is also used for meat roasting. In particular they are used to gather the juices below the pan. These are applied to the meat.
Over the years, the features of the basting brush have changed. There are now many bristles that are stain resistant. The grip handles of the brushes are now ergonomically designed.
Many of the brushes are also safe for dishwashers. The heat resistance of these devices varies; many of them can resist 500 degrees F. Most of them also have holes for hanging.
Notes on the Bristles
It isn’t just the size of a basting brush that varies; the bristles vary too. As stated earlier, various types can be used. Some bristles are made of goose feathers and others of boar.
The best types are the silicone brushes as they are heat resistant. The silicone brushes can be used for applying sauces and marinade. The silicone bristles can also be used on dishwashers.
Before Using the Silicone Basting Brush
Make sure you wash the basting brush first before you use it. For first time use, the silicone brush should be washed with dish soap and warm water. Make certain there are no defective bristles there. This will be unlikely in silicone brushes though.
Unlike old fashioned brushes, the bristles are molded. You should also check the brush every now and then especially if it’s used regularly. When you are done washing, allow the brush to dry. The bristles must be oriented up.
The size of a basting brush must always be assessed before you use it. This will determine how easy it will be to use in cooking.
