Tallest Dog Breed
The tallest dog breed in the world is the Irish Wolfhound, not the Great Dane. However, a Great Dane holds the record for the tallest dog in the world. This Great Dane named Gibson stands 42 inches at the nape of the neck.
1. Irish Wolfhound
In terms of average height, the Irish Wolfhound is the tallest. On average, they are 30 to 35 inches tall up to the shoulder. The typical weight is 105 to 135 lbs. Their built is similar to the Greyhound. Colors range from black, white, brindle, red, grey and fawn. These dogs are strong, quick and agile. In the past they were used to hunt Irish Elk, the biggest deer that ever lived.
2. Great Dane
Great Danes are the second tallest dog breed. Their average height is 28 to 32 inches. Their average weight is 100 to 120 lbs. Colors range from mantle, harlequin, black and fawn. The Great Dane’s origin lies in the breeding of the tallest (the Irish wolfhound) and the heaviest dog breed (the English Mastiff). They make for excellent pets.
3. English Mastiff
The English Mastiff stands 27 to 32 niches high. They are very heavy, weighing 175 to 250 lbs. Although not the tallest, they are the heaviest dog breeds. Colors can range from fawn, brindle or apricot. The dog does not need a lot of exercise. The dog is gentle, but can be very protective of their masters.
4. Newfoundland
Their height can range from 26 to 30 inches. Their weight can range from 130 to 150 lbs. The coat can range from black, white or brown. The dog is known for being sweet natured and not being ill-tempered. The Newfoundland is also known for its swimming ability.
5. Neapolitan Mastiffs
The dog’s height can range from 24 to 31 inches. The dog weighs anywhere from 110 to 180 lbs. They are noted for their loose skin. The coat can be grey, tawny, black or mahogany. Some have white or brindle markings. The droopy jowl is one of their characteristics. The dog is friendly, but it can make a mess.

If you want to own the tallest dog breed, make sure you have plenty of room. These dogs require a lot of exercise. Even though they are gentle, training should be done as early as possible.
