Suitable Home Office Size
There is no one suitable home office size as people’s needs vary. There is also the question of available space. If you have plenty of space available, you shouldn’t have problems. But even if space is limited, you can still turn it into a suitable workplace.
Use the Room Corners
You can avoid wasting space by using the corner as the work area center. Big monitors will fit comfortably in these parts. You can also move the chair left to right.
You will also have room to write on both keyboard sides. By using the corner as the work center, it avoids being a repository for lost papers, paper clips, books and other office items.
Install Shelves
You can make the most of the existing home office size by installing shelves over the desktop. Put shelves on the wall face of the desktop. Use these to store the supplies, books, printer, scanners, speakers and other paraphernalia.
Place the low shelf about 20 inches over the desktop. This will allow you to reach the shelf’s contents even if you are sitting on the chair. You can add one or two more shelves over it. A mini computer tower should have no problems fitting below the shelves.
Make sure you use strong shelves so it can hold the weight of the printer and other hardware. You should also place the less used components on the upper shelves.
Avoid Duplicating Your Office Design
The worst mistake you can make when planning your home office size layout is to replicate the one in your office. It just won’t work. The working conditions aren’t the same. Instead, come up with a design that will make the most of the space available in the room, be it a basement, attic or other room.
Assess the Tasks
What kind of work will you be doing? Is it using the computer and making phone calls? Even a small room will suffice in most cases. Or will you be preparing packages for mailing?
Will you be doing data entry or bookkeeping? You also need to consider the tasks you will be performing most often. This will determine the design of the room.
Use Only the Necessary Tools
Put in equipment that you will need. This includes the desk, chairs, lamp, computer and phone. Unless you need a speakerphone, answering machine and fax, don’t put them in the room. They will just occupy more space.
Put cabinets or file boxes nearby so your papers and documents don’t clutter the desk. Have a separate drawer for other supplies like labels, padded mailers, envelopes, cardboard boxes and labels.
Don’t forget to arrange the cables and electric outlet. Many computer desks are designed to keep the cables uncluttered. Hire the services of an electrician if you want to change the settings for any of the outlets.
Even if your home office size is limited, you can still make the most out of it through planning. By making use of every available space, you will be able to make even small rooms suitable for serious work.
