Smallest Dog Breed

In the animal kingdom, dogs hold the distinction of being referred to as Man’s best friend. Because of their intelligence, loyalty and constant display of affection towards their master, they are the hands-down winner as the most popular choice as house pets. Unlike most domesticated animals, dogs love the attention of their master and reciprocate by their own display of affection and loyalty. For this reason, they are territorial and extremely protective such that even the smallest dog breed will defend its master and his property against any threat or intruder regardless of the size of its opponent.

You can choose to own large to medium dog breeds such as a Great Dane or German Shepherd if you are looking for a pet that would intimidate or deter intruders from breaking into your house or property. However, it takes a lot of time, dedication and effort to maintain and groom these breeds. And, if you are not ready for large dog breeds or do not have a big house and a large area where they can romp and exercise, perhaps you can consider owning a smaller breed. Many dog lovers are beginning to appreciate small or toy breeds that they can tote around in a small basket, shoulder bag or even inside a pocket of a jacket. Generally, small breeds are dogs that weigh less than 22 pounds and stand not more than 16 inches from toe to withers. The Chihuahua, which is considered as the smallest dog breed in the world typically weighs not more than 6 pounds and stands between 6 to 8 inches. The record of being the smallest dog in world is held by a Chihuahua, which stood at a mere 4 inches.

Despite their reputation as the smallest dog breed in the world, Chihuahuas can be deceptively ferocious as any large guard dog. Fooled by their cute and cuddly appearance, many an unsuspecting stranger had patted or touched the snout of a Chihuahua in a grocery cart at the expense of a finger. Because of their tendency to growl, nip or bite at anyone but their master, Chihuahuas are more suited as a companion for an adult and not ideal as a pet for children. Like any small dog breed, Chihuahuas are highly energetic and tend to be jealous when their master displays more attention to other people or animals in the house. Hence, they dislike being left alone and love the constant company of their master. If your work will prevent you from spending time with your Chihuahua, then the world's smallest dog breed is obviously not suitable for you.
