Sizes of Baby Carriers
Baby carriers help parents move around and do other things while keeping the baby close, so close that the baby clings to the parent’s body.
There are basically two types of baby carriers: a backpack or front-pack style carrier and a wraparound sling carrier.
There are several sizes of baby carriers for both these types and sizing is usually determined by the parent’s height, clothing size or the baby’s weight.
Sizes of Baby Carriers
Backpack or Front-pack Styles
There are several excellent brands for this type of carrier and usually, the sizes are based more on the baby’s weight and age range.
Sizes of baby carriers for this type are generally around thirteen inches in width by sixteen inches in height and can support newborns and toddlers, from seven pounds up to forty-five pounds in weight.
When buying this type of carrier, check for the maximum adjustable length of the strap and width of the belt to ensure that the carrier will snuggly fit the baby and comfortably fit you as he grows and develops.
Some straps can be adjusted up to forty-five inches long and the belts up to fifty-seven inches wide.
Wraparound Sling Carriers
Sizes of baby carriers for this type are generally determined by the parent’s dress or jacket size. An Extra Small wraparound carrier is for women with a dress size of 0 to 4, while a Small one is for women with a dress size of 6 to 8; and men with a jacket size of up to 38.
Medium is best for women with a dress size of 10 to 12, and man’s jacket size of 39 up to 42; while a Large size is ideal for women with a dress size of 14 up to 16 and a man’s jacket size of 43 up to 46.
Finally, an Extra Large size is for women with a dress size of 18 up to 22 and a man’s jacket size of 47 up to 50.
Sometimes, sizes of baby carriers for the wraparound style are also indicated by the length of the fabric. An Extra Small one is approximately 3.6 meters or about 3.94 yards while a Small one is generally around 4.2 meters or about 4.59 yards.
A Medium size wrap is about 4.6 meters or roughly around 5 yards and a Large size wrap is around 5.2 meters or approximately 5.69 yards.
When looking at sizes of baby carriers, it is best to try it on with the baby inside so you will have a good idea of how comfortable you and the baby will be as you are both using the carrier.
