Size of PC Speakers
There are many different PC speaker sizes. Some products measure 4.81”H x 2.5”W x 4.81”D, while others are 5”H x 3.2”W x 5”D. The trend is towards smaller but more powerful sets. Below are other factors that buyers should mull over.
How do You Use the Computer?
If you use it mostly for surfing the web, word processing and photo editing, the most basic speakers will do. It doesn’t matter what size it is unless space is an issue. The basic, magnetically shielded devices will suffice.
If you are into gaming or watch DVD films, high end speakers will be necessary. The basic devices will not be able to produce the sounds that the game or movie is capable of. At the very least, a 3 piece set with subwoofer is needed. A six piece set is recommended for those with 3D sound cards.
2.0 and 2.1 Systems
A 2.0 system means two channels or speakers without a subwoofer. The 2.1 includes a subwoofer. The 2.0 system channels are usually larger than the 2.1 channels. The amplifier is installed in one of the channels.
The 2.1 system has two small channels (also called satellites). The third component (the subwoofer/amp) is larger than the two. The 2.1 system is also called the sub/sta system (subwoofer/satellite).
If space is an issue, the 2.0 system PC speaker sizes are the better option. You only need to make room for two devices. The 2.1 satellites are physically smaller than the 2.0. This is possible because the frequencies are handled by the subwoofer. But you need to make room for the subwoofer though.
In terms of sound quality, the 2.1 produces better sounds. Sets with more speakers will produce even more realistic sounds. But you will need more space there. For example, six-piece sets have to be spaced around the room to get maximum sound effects.
Controls
The most basic systems don’t even have volume controls. You control the volume from the computer. However, many 2.0, 2.1 and multiple piece systems have at least volume and bass controls.
The high end sets have numerous controls. They also have remote controls. If a remote control isn’t included, make sure the controls are easily reachable. This is very important especially if you play a lot of games.
Besides the PC speaker sizes, the appearance is also worth considering. The price is always a factor. Fortunately, speakers have become very affordable.
