A room divider can be used in many ways. As the following will show, room dividers can be both practical and decorative.

Room Divider Dimensions: Oriental Furniture Room Divider

The Oriental Furniture room divider measures 6 x 71 x 17 x ¾ inches. The panels are 6 x 6.75 ft. The room divider is double hinged so bending is possible both ways. The material is comprised of kiln dried wood and durable plant fiber.

Entirely opaque, it comes in black, mocha, cream, white and other colors. The divider can be in 1, 3, 5 or 6 panels. The six panel divider is seven feet wide when set on the floor. Shadows, light or air cannot go through the divider.

Room Divider Dimensions: Furniture Source Cherry Wood Shoji Screen

A 3 panel cherry wood shoji screen measures 54 x 2 x 71 inches. This room divider can be used to separate various elements in the house (i.e., dining section from the kitchen). The gaps between the screens are uniform.

The hinges are bi-fold for additional flexibility (note: the wood pattern is on one side). Like other room dividers, it can be used to organize space or create an ambient setting. In the latter case, lamps can be placed behind the divider to create an ambient atmosphere.

Other Types of Room Dividers

The room divider dimensions and material are not the only things that distinguish these products. Some are equipped with photo handlers. These holders can be used to store artworks, maps and other documents.

The sizes of the photo holders / picture frames vary, but more than a few come in at 5 x 7 inches and 8 x 10 inches. The materials used for the panes vary too, with some now available in Plexiglas.

There are four major styles available: the Japanese design / paper shoji screen, the wood slat, European and Asian style.

Shoji Screens

The Japanese wood frame / paper shoji screens are the most popular. In terms of room divider dimensions, finishing, color and price, this is the most flexible. The shoji screens (as the room divider is called in this style) have Japanese designs based on the Edo period. Material used is usually kiln dried lumber.

There are also paper panels available. Because it is light, the paper panels are most useful for 4, 5, 6 panels. The paper panels are also handy for 7 foot panels which tend to be heavy.

Wood Slat and Others

The wood slat dividers are heavier. However, their advantage is they don’t get easily knocked over and thus more stable. In some designs, the binds can be adjusted so air can flow. The thicker wood slats are useful to create privacy.

The Asian style panel is generally light and opaque. The frames are typically kiln dried and come in a variety of patterns. The European style dividers usually have a heavy texture (faux zebra, snake, crocodile etc). These dividers are usually used in dorms or apartments.

Finally, before you decide on the room divider dimensions, make sure the area actually has space for it and doesn’t crowd the room even more.
