Pliers Dimensions
The dimensions of pliers differ because there are so many types available. Some of the most common pliers’ sizes are 6 inches, 8 inches and 10 inches. But there are other sizes available.
Basic Facts about Pliers
The most basic pliers will have at least three parts: the pivot, handle and jaws. It is used to cut, turn or grip an object. This is done by increasing the force being put on by the user. Although there are several variants, they can be divided into two types: those with a fixed joint and those with a slip joint.
The Slip Joint Pliers
These pliers can be opened in different widths. This can be done by slipping the pivot into the appropriate grooves. Its flexibility has made it a staple in many toolboxes. By adjusting the width, all sorts of repair jobs can be performed.
Fixed Joint Pliers
These pliers cannot be adjusted like the slip joint pliers but they are also useful. Even though the dimensions of pliers differ, the design allows you to lock the tool while gripping it. This will let the utility put the pressure on. Newer models have a quick-release feature built in.
Other Kinds of Pliers
The linemen’s pliers are used for electrical applications. They are bigger than the regular pliers. Needle-nose pliers are used for handling small objects. The side cutters or diagonal pliers are utilized to snip different kinds of wire including copper, brass, steel or brass.
The bolt cutters are distinguished by their long handles and short jaws. As the name suggests, they can cut bolts. But they can also cut wire mesh and chains.
Reminders for Using Pliers
Always read the product instructions first before using the tool. Do not attempt to cut a live wire with any type of pliers. The linemen’s pliers can shield you from the shock, but the danger is still there. Be certain you are using the right pliers for the job.
Don’t use needle-nose pliers to turn nuts. Lubricate the pliers’ joint to keep it working. Just a drop of oil will be sufficient. Do not place the pliers near heat or its performance will be affected. If the pliers have specific care and maintenance instructions, follow it. This will ensure the pliers do not get damaged.
