Based on historical accounts, Standard Oil founder Henry Morrison Flagler established Palm Beach as a resort. He was an American tycoon responsible for making the Atlantic coast barrier island accessible through the Florida East Coast Railway. The early community was made up of a couple of luxury resorts owned by Flagler, namely the Breakers Hotel and the Royal Poinciana Hotel. In 1902, he established a Beaux-Arts mansion called the Whitehall. On April 17, 1911, the town was finally incorporated.
