How Big is a Soccer Field?
The size of a soccer field varies from 50 to 100 yards wide by 100 to 130 yards long. The standard pitch length in international competition (adults, male) is 100 to 110 m (110 to 120 yd). The width is between 64 to 75 m (70 to 80 yd). For non-international games, the length is 90 to 120 m (100 to 130 yd). The width is 45 to 90 m (50 to 100 yd).
Other Information about the Pitch
The touchlines are the long boundary lines. The goal lines are the short boundaries. This is where the goals are set. A rectangle shaped goal is set in the center of the goal lines.
The vertical goal posts inner edges have to be 7.32 m (8 yd) distant. The horizontal crossbar’s lower edges supported by the posts are 2.44 m (8 ft) over the playing surface. Regardless of the size of a soccer field, nets are installed at the back of the goal.
The Penalty Area
This area is at the front of the goal. A couple of lines known as the goal line mark it. The lines commence 16.5 m (18 yd) beginning at the goalposts. It goes 16.5 m (18 yd) up to the pitch. It is at right angles to the goal line. A line connects the two. The penalty area is where the goalkeeper can hold the ball. This is also where a penalty kick takes place.
Variations in Size
100 to 130 yards long and 50 to 100 yards wide are the dimensions used in almost all adult soccer games. However, the field used for disabled players and women are usually smaller. Soccer players between 16 and 35 years old can play in smaller fields. The field dimensions used for youth games vary.
Recommended Field Dimensions
For those under six years of age, 15 x 30 yards is ideal. For those under 8, it is 25 x 50 yards. For those under 10 years of age, it is 40 x 70. 50 x 80 yards is recommended for players below 12 years of age. For those under 14, it is 60 x 100 yards.
For recreational players, a smaller field will be more enjoyable. If the size of a soccer field is akin to the professional level, it will be difficult for some players to get touches. A smaller one makes it easier to score goals and get everyone involved. Once the players are comfortable with the size, you can expand it as necessary.
