The ball was invented in 1848 by Robert Adams Paterson. Originally, it was known as the gutta-percha or guttie ball. Although the ball looks simple enough, several factors influence its course. These factors are the velocity, launch angle and spin rate.

Features

When manufacturers design these balls, they have to assess the velocity, distance and symmetry limits. Every ball will have dimples. The numbers range from 250 to 450.

The specifications for these balls are determined by the Royal and Ancient Golf Club of Saint Andrews in Scotland and the United States Golf Association.

These two organizations are responsible for regulating the golf ball size. Their rules also stipulate that the velocity cannot go beyond 250 feet per second.

Aerodynamics and Other Features

The ball spin rate is heavily affected by the impact it receives. Impacts also influence the velocity and the launch angle. The dimples were first introduced in 1908 and can be found in most balls.

A one piece ball is barely used when playing the game. But it is ideal for beginners and it is cheap. These are usually constructed from Surlyn. The two piece ball is the one used by casual golfers. It offers a good combination of distance and durability. These are made from a single solid core. The core is comprised of resin or high-energy acrylate.

The three piece golf ball has a liquid core or solid rubber. The cover is composed of elastic windings. The covering is Balata, Surlyn or others like it. Three piece balls are also known as wound balls. Their main characteristic is the extra spin.

If you are just starting out, the golf ball size may not be as important as the material composition. But if you are playing for a while, the dimensions will become more important.
