How Big are Snow Shoes?
Unlike the many sports that are popular in the snow, snow shoeing is a sport that can be easily learned by anyone. In fact, if you know how to walk then you definitely know how to snow shoe. The sport is basically the equivalent of hiking except that you’re walking in crisp new fallen snow. It is both an adventurous treat and a refreshing experience.
Size and Dimensions
Sizing up your shoes will definitely be the first task that anyone will have to take on. This will be pretty much like buying a new pair of shoes only that you will have to make a few adjustments in the process. Note that just like any other shoe you have to buy, these shoes that are designed for rugged winter terrain also come in a variety of sizes.
The usual sizes of these shoes are 9″x 30″ shoes, 8″ x 25″ shoes, and 10″ x 36″ shoes. Take note that composite shoes of this type are a totally different matter. These composite shoes only come in one size – 8″ x 22″. However, there is always the option to add a four to eight inch tail to help keep you afloat on the snow. Having the additional tail on a composite shoe will provide you with the proper amount of snow floatation.
Size Adjustments by Gender
If you are presented with the daunting task of purchasing snow shoes for the entire family then you will have to take into consideration the fact that men’s sizes are totally different than women’s sizes. Well, obviously the sizes for the kids will be drastically different as well.
Men’s sizes are geared up for heavier loads and larger boot sizes. On the other hand, women’s size and dimensions tend to be narrower and more contoured. Obviously, women’s sizes will be toned down to fit the ladies’ footwear. Now, the snow shoes for kids will vary depending on the age of the child. Note that the smaller shoe sizes are recommended for casual play in the snow. The larger sizes tend to be outfitted with the same features as the sizes that are designed for adults.
Size Adjustments by Weight
A shoe sizing chart will come in handy when you’re determining the right size of shoe according to your weight. The idea of course is to be able to keep afloat on the snow. A sizing chart will show you the optimal sizes according to the weight of the person who will wear the shoe. For instance, a shoe length of 20″ to 22″ will be best suited for people who are 100 to 140 pounds. On the other hand, a shoe length of 25″ to 26″ is best suited for people who weigh around 180 pounds.
Getting the right sized snow shoes will require you to make adjustments by gender and weight. Take note of the regular size and dimensions and make your adjustments accordingly.
