If you’re upgrading your kitchen and you want to get new kitchen appliances such as a dishwasher, it would be a good idea to measure the space where the old dishwasher used to be in order to get the right dishwasher dimensions.

This is especially important if your dishwasher is the under-the-counter type and is a rather old model.

Now, if you’re moving to a smaller apartment, you also need to take into consideration the size of the dishwasher; plus if you’re just renting the place, you may want to get a compact model so you can easily take this with you should you decide to move again.

Dishwasher Models and Sizes

Dishwasher dimensions depend on the type or model that you will be getting. As previously mentioned, there is an under-the-counter type.

There is a standard type and a compact type of under-the-counter dishwasher and these are commercially available and ready for installation.

There is also a countertop model, an in-sink type, compact, portable and a single-drawer type. Each brand of dishwasher may have its own dimensions for their various models but just to give you a clue as to the common sizes that you will find in the market today, check out the following:

Standard Under-the-Counter – width: 24 inches; depth: 24 inches; height: 35 inches

Compact Under-the-Counter – width: 18 inches; depth: 24 inches; height: 35 inches

Single-Drawer – width: 24 inches; depth: 24 inches; height: 16 inches

Under-sink – width: 24 inches; depth: 24 inches; height: 34 inches

Portable – width: 18 inches; depth: 24 inches; height: 36 inches

Countertop – width: 18 to 22 inches; depth: 18 to 22 inches; height: 18 to 22 inches

In-Sink – width: 36 to 42 inches; depth: 22 inches; height: 21 inches

Choosing Dishwasher Sizes

Aside from looking at dishwasher sizes that will fit into your kitchen space, you should also consider the unit’s capacity in terms of the number of plates and dishes it can hold per cycle.

This is an important factor to consider if you don’t want to be washing dishes on several cycles per meal time just so every plate, glass, fork and spoon will be washed.

Usually, a standard-sized dishwasher whether countertop, under-the-counter or under-sink, can accommodate twelve pieces each of the following per cycle: plates, soup bowls, cups, saucers, glasses, forks, spoons, table knives and dessert plates.

Plate sizes that most dishwashers can accommodate are about 24 centimeters in diameter; dessert plates, 18.5 centimeters in diameter; and soup bowls, about 23 centimeters in diameter.
