Dipstick Sizes
A dipstick is a simple device available in two different types. The first one is used to measure liquid quantity, such as the one found in different types of vehicles like cars, trucks and motorcycles. The second type is commonly used to perform chemical tests. There is also a dipstick designed to measure the contents of an ale cask, which is designed to hold different kinds of alcoholic beverages specifically beer. Aside from these interesting facts, there are more to know about it including the different dipstick sizes.
The Sizes of Dipsticks
One of the most common forms of a dipstick is the one used in internal combustion engines. The usual length of this measuring device is 15 inches or 381 millimeters. It is made up of a thin flexible coil or a metal strip, the purpose of which is to measure the quantity of lubricating oil. Aside from this, there is another dipstick found inside cars, the purpose of which is to measure the amount of transmission fluid. Generally, this is a longer variant compared to the other one, the standard length of which measures about 25 inches or 635 millimeters.
To measure the amount of beer left inside an ale cask, you need to use a dipstick designed for this particular purpose. This special device can measure a gallon up to 9 gallons of beer, the measurements of which can range from 2.72 inches or 69 millimeters up to 13.98 inches or 355 millimeters. The materials commonly used for this kind of stick include brass or stainless steel. This flat strip or thin square rod is then inserted right through a small opening right above the horizontal cask.
Additional Facts and Other Interesting Details
When checking the remaining lubricating oil inside your car, simply remove the dipstick from its original position and then wipe it dry using a paper towel or rag. Once the surface is fresh, reinsert it and then take it out once again to see the results. This stick usually contains markings that provide the necessary measurements. The same steps are needed to use the dipstick for the transmission fluid.
Aside from these types of dipsticks, there is also a testing dipstick, which is made from cardboard or paper. This type of device is impregnated with reagents to test different kinds of liquids. For instance, this device can be used to test urine for the presence of nitrite and haemoglobin, the presence of which are commonly associated with urinary tract infections. Other possible elements that can be found in the urine include ketones, glucose and protein. This kind of dipstick has a rough texture and a relatively bright color.
