Ever since the first cash register by James Ritty came to town in 1879, other models have emerged with better features to cater to the growing needs of buyers. Also known as the “Incorruptible cashier” during that time, its dimensions are around fourteen (14) by eighteen (18) inches at the counter’s base. The height is said to be created at around sixteen (16) inches. With those measurements, it may make you think if all the cash registers sizes are the same with the first model ever invented?

Currently, there are three types that are being sold in numerous markets. These are the standard register, the self check-out cash registers, and the models that have PC-based POS systems.

Let’s check if these have similar or different cash registers sizes with the original.

The Standard Register

This type of counter or cash register can be seen in most shops. Its features include a sales tracker and a function to print receipts.

The typical dimensions of the standard register are 3 by 3 inches equivalent to 76 by 76 mm. Others have sizes of 275mm for the length, 195mm for the width, and 55mm for the height.

Other manufacturers have created this type of cash register with drawer dimensions of around 15 and 3/4 inches W by 17 and 3/4 D by 4 and 1/4 inches H.

The PC-Based POS Systems

Many groceries use the PC-based POS counters. This makes check-out easier and quicker since all the cashier has to do is to scan a particular product’s bar code and it will automatically enter the sales info (like pricing) into the computer.

With this counter, customers can choose what mode of payment to use – check, credit card, debit card, or cash.

A particular model being sold in the market has its maximum size with connectors at around 145 by 127 by 43 mm for its length, width, and height. That is equivalent in inches to dimensions of around 5.7 for its length by 5 for its width by 1.7 for its height.

Self Check-Out Counters

Self check-out cash registers function a lot like the PC-based POS counters. Also called as the Self-Serve cash register, its only difference with the PC-based POS systems is that there is no need for a cashier to scan the bar code of products. The customer can do this alone. Payments can be made through the cash register’s terminal. This may be in card, cash, or check.

Dimensions for these types are around 600 by 850 by 2500 for the width, height, and length. Others have sizes of about 355W by 424D by 308H mm with a weight of 13.5 kg.

With that earlier 14 by 18 by 16 inches for the very first model of cash registers, there are many changes that had happened along the way. One of these changes includes the cash registers sizes which vary depending on the particular type it may belong to and the manufacturers who make them.
