The biggest bullhead catfish in the world weighs 8 lbs. It was captured on August 1, 1951 in New York, USA. But there are reports of much larger bullhead catfish, although they have not yet been measured.
Are the Bullhead and Catfish the Same?
They are usually recognized as one and the same. However, the International Game Fish Association (IGFA) considers them as different species. The records for catfish and bullheads differ. Based on the IFGA records, there are three kinds of bullheads and other types of catfish.
The Black Bullhead
This can be found from the Mexican Gulf to southern Ontario. It can also be found in various states across America, including California and Arizona. The bullheads are named after colors. In fact, the bullhead can appear in different colors.
The Brown Bullhead
The brown bullhead can be found along the eastern coast of the United States. The fish can also be found in southern Canada. It has also been placed in various locations around the world.
The biggest brown bullhead captured weighed 5 lbs. 8 oz. (2.49 kg). It is smaller than the biggest bullhead catfish captured. This brown bullhead was captured on May 22, 1975 in Georgia, USA.
The Yellow Bullhead
This is smaller than the black and brown bullhead. The fish can be found on either side of the Appalachians. The fish prefers to swim in shallow waters, in contrast to the brown and black bullheads. The biggest yellow bullhead weighed in at 4 lbs. 4 oz. (1.92 kg). It was captured on May 11, 1984 in Arizona.
The Biggest Catfish
The largest captured was a blue catfish. It weighed 109 lb. 4 oz. (49.55 kg). The fish was captured on March 14, 1991 in South Carolina. There are reports of some catfish weighing as much as 120 lbs. (54 kg). However, they have not been verified. The blue catfish is found in northern Guatemala, Mexico and the Ohio River.
The most common type is the channel catfish. This is the type usually served at restaurants. It is commercially produced and is also used as sport fish. The largest channel fish on record weighed 58 lbs (26.3 kg). It was captured on July 7, 1964 in South Carolina, USA.
Due to the different ways in which the fish is classified, it is not easy to determine the biggest bullhead catfish. The specimen mentioned above is based on the premise the bullhead and catfish are not the same. If not considered distinct, the other figures cited should be regarded instead.
