Biggest Baseball Field Dimensions
The biggest baseball field dimensions ever was the Braves Field in Boston, which used to be the home of the Boston Braves. The right and left field lines measured 402 feet down. The measurement to the right of straightaway center field was 550 feet. This field is no longer in use.
Other Large Fields
One of them is Comerica Park of the Detroit Tigers. Right field is 330 ft, while right center is 365 feet. Center is 420 feet. Left center is 382 feet and left field is 345 feet. It is the biggest in the American League. In the National League, there are two contenders. The first is Minute Maid Park of the Houston Astros. Its right field is 326 ft; right center is 373 ft and centerfield is 435 ft. The left center is 362 ft and left field is 315 ft.
The other is the Florida Marlins’ Dolphin Stadium. It is 330 ft at left field, 345 ft right field, 361 ft right center, 435 center and 360 left center.
If you take a look at the biggest baseball field dimensions, it becomes evident that older fields are bigger than their modern counterparts. The current Yankee Stadium has a 408 ft center field. But when it was inaugurated, the center was 500 ft. It wasn’t uncommon in the past for baseball parks to have 500 ft+ centers. A good example is West Side Park, former home of the Chicago Cubs. It was used beginning 1893 until 1915. Its center field was 560 ft.
The Playing Field in Detail
A baseball field is called a diamond due to the shape. In reality, it is more like a square of dirt. It contains the pitcher’s mound, home plate and the three bases. The area between the home and the bases is grass. The only exception is the mound of dirt in the middle.
There are a couple of lines running from home plate. The lines are called foul lines. If a batter hits a ball and lands between the lines, it is considered foul. The ball is also foul if it rolls from this area before getting to first base.
The biggest baseball field dimensions are not indicative of the size of the stadium however. A small field for example, does not mean its seating capacity is limited. When it comes to stadiums, they are measured by how many people they are able to accommodate.
