Bed Size Standards

Bed size standards may vary depending on the manufacturer and the standard of measurement of different countries or continents. This being said, it is not enough to simply go with the sizing terms of bed mattresses as their specific measurements may vary, however slightly.

While bed frames may come in measurements that are bigger than the dimensions of the mattress, these are more so because of the ornaments or designs of the frame. The space on the frame however, upon which you will be placing the mattress is basically just the same as the size of the mattress.

US Standard Bed Mattress Sizes

In the United States, standard mattresses come in four basic classifications. These are Twin, Double, Queen and King. However, to add to the selection of mattresses; these four basic types also come in different variations.

For instance, a Twin mattress is generally around 39 inches in width by 75 inches in length. A variation of this is the Twin Extra Long. As its name suggests, this is longer than your regular Twin mattress – 5 inches longer to be exact.

So a Twin Extra Long measures 39 inches in width by 80 inches in length.

The Double mattress on the other hand, measures approximately 54 inches in width by 75 inches in length. A variation of this is the Full Extra Long. This one has different sizes for both the width and the length.

This one measures 53 inches in width by 80 inches in length.

For the Queen mattress, you will basically have dimensions of 60 inches in width by 80 inches in length. There are three variations of this mattress: the California Queen, Expanded Queen and the Super Queen.

California Queen mattresses generally measure about 60 inches wide by 84 inches long while the Expanded Queen is around 66 inches in width and 80 inches in length.

As for the Super Queen, this is basically the same size as the Expanded Queen except that this one has more depth or is generally thicker. Thickness may vary from manufacturer to manufacturer.

Finally, there is the King mattress. This type measures approximately 76 inches wide and 80 inches long. For this one, there are two variations: the California King and the Grand King.

The California King mattress is a bit narrower in width but longer than the standard King. This one measures 72 inches in width by 84 inches in length. Lastly, there is the Grand King. This is considered as the mother of all standard bed sizes.

This one measures 80 inches wide by 98 inches long – ideal for people who are quite taller than average.
