American Flag Dimensions
Numerous American flag dimensions are in existence. The majority of commercially available flags though, are 3 x 5 ft. or 6 x 10 ft. (1.667), 2.5 x 4 ft. or 5 x 8 ft. (1.6) and 2 x 3 ft. or 4 x 6 ft. The flag ratio often used is 1.5.
Appropriate US Flag Specifications
For a single flag set on a pole or roof, the flag width has to be half the pole length. If the flag is on an outrigger pole, the flag has to be 3/8 to half to the pole length. There are also freestanding flagpoles. The flag width has to be a fourth of the flagpole height.
Ground Set Poles (Exposed Height of Pole)
If it is 15′-20′, the flag size should be 3′ x 5′; if the pole height is 25′, the flag should be 4′ x 6′. For 30′-35′ pole heights, the flag ought to be 5′ x 8′; for a 40′-45′ pole, use a 6′ x 10′ flag. The flag specs for 50′, 60′-65′, 70′-80′ and 90′ x 100′ exposed pole heights are 8′ x 12′, 10′ x 15′, 12′ x 18′ and 15′ x 25′ respectively.
Roof-Mounted Poles
American flag dimensions of 4′ x 6′ are best suited for 15′ pole heights. 20′-30′ and 35′-40′ are used for 5′ x 8′ and 6′ x 10′ flags. For pole heights of 45′-50′, 50′-65′ and 70′-75′ will look best with 8′ x 12′, 9′ x 15′ and 10′ x 15′ flags.
Wall Mounted Poles
For vertical pole heights above the wall that is 12′-15′, a 4′ x 6′ is most ideal. 16′ x 30′ and 35′-40′ vertical walls should use 5′ x 8′ and 6′ x 10′ flags. For outrigger types, an 8′ pole length should have a 3′ x 5′ flag. 10′-12′, 15′-16′ and 16′-23′ walls should use 4′ x 6′, 5′ x 8′ and 6′ x 10′ flags.
Other Information about the US Flag
For oversized flags, you can use a flag that is one size larger than the ones stated above. If the pole has many flags, the topmost flag should be the largest. The ones below it should be one size smaller.
Not only are there many American flag dimensions; different materials are also used. 2-ply polyester, nylon, heavy-weight cotton, sunbrella, vinyl and cotton sheeting are just some of the most popular. Of all these materials, 2-ply polyester is the most durable.
