Brief History
Having no children due to the fact that he never married, Jack left his distillery to his nephew Lem Motlow who first started as a bookkeeper in the company until the time when he was given full control of it with the passing away of Jack Daniel in 1911 due to blood poisoning.
Motlow later gave control of the company to his kids as indicated in his will after his demise in 1947. In 1910, the distillery was closed down because of certain laws that prohibited production of the whiskey in Tennessee.
It wasn’t until Lem Motlow became a Tennessee senator in 1938 that production was once again allowed in the state, having fought tooth and nail to repeal the ban.
The company once again faced a challenge when the US government banned production of whiskey during the World War II, starting in 1942 and ending in 1946.
1947 once again saw the distillery working at its fullest.
