A laundry room is used for washing clothes.
Contemporary laundry rooms are situated close to the kitchen. It usually has a washing machine, a basin and clothes dryer.
Size of the Laundry Room
Laundry room dimensions differ. Since there are no standards, the size must depend on your needs. Start by measuring the room. Next, make a list of the items you want to put there. If you have plenty of space, you should have no problems.
If room is limited, you must maximize the space. One of the things you can do is add shelves and / or cabinets. Use these to store various items and save space.
Organize the Space
If there are many people using the laundry room, place individual hampers there. Label or color-code these so there is no confusion. Whatever the size of the laundry room is, make it a point to organize the cleaning items.
Put the stain removers, starches, fabric softeners and laundry detergents close to the washing machine. Place them together so they are easy to reach. Set these far from the clothes so spills won’t cause harm. If space permits, set these cleaners on a shelf.
If you need to store a lot of items in the rooms, make wall storage. You can use cabinets, peg boards and hooks for this task. You can keep clutter to a minimum by placing a trashcan near the dryer and washer. Use it to discard used dryer sheets, lint and other disposable items.
If the size of the laundry room is sufficient, put a hanging garment or laundry cart in it. This is for the newly washed clothing. After the clothes are dried and folded, remove them from the room. This will keep reduce the clutter.
Other Ways to Save on Space
Have a small basket near the washing machine to store any toys, paper, keys, receipts, coins and other items found among the clothes. There are also foldable ironing tables available. Use these if the room size is inadequate. Other types of folding tables are available as well. You can also use wire shelving to organize the room.
Access Issues
Needless to say, the door must be wide enough to allow washing machines, dryers, rotary irons and other equipment to be put inside. These appliances cannot be disassembled, so you must account for this early in the planning stage.
Other Factors to Consider
The room must have access to the following: water supply, drainage and power. In addition, the room must have ventilation. Make sure also that the dirty laundry is placed as near the washing machine as possible.
This setup makes it easy to carry the clothes to the washing machine. This might not seem important, but it will be if you wash a lot of clothes. Over time, their weight will take its toll.
Since it is so vital, the size of the laundry room cannot be ignored. Even if the space is minimal, proper arrangement of the equipment will make washing clothes easier and less of a chore.
