As the name suggests, safety glasses are worn to protect the eyes. They can be worn when working with chemicals, lab experiments, when doing DIY projects and other tasks. The main goal of safety glasses is to keep debris from getting to the eyes. 

Safety Glasses Sizes

While safety glasses come in a variety of styles, shapes and colors, all of them must be at least 1 mm thick at their thinnest part. The protective goggles and welding filters have to be at least 3 mm thick. The high impact lenses that are put in prescription frames must be at least 2 mm thick. 

Construction 

Majority of safety glasses are made of shatter proof plastic. Other glasses are made from different materials. This means the protection they offer varies. For instance, the medicine safety glasses are meant to shield the eyes from blood splattering. 

The safety glasses sizes and types used in factories differ. They have more durable lenses. The frame will also be stronger. The glasses will also have protection for the forehead.

Standards 

The standards for safety glasses in the US were set by the American National Standards Institute as ANSI Z87.1. Other countries have their own guidelines, many of which resemble the standards set in the US. The standards and guidelines differ depending on how the safety glasses will be used.

Types 

Several safety glasses can be fitted over sunglasses or corrective spectacles. These are lighter than other safety glasses, making them easier to wear. However, these offer less protection. 

Many of the contemporary safety glasses are now stylishly made so people will use them more often. Most corrective glasses fitted with plastic lenses can be worn in lieu of safety glasses in many cases. 

The safety glasses sizes used for welding vary, but all of them have dark lenses. These are known as flash goggles and worn when full face welding helmets isn’t possible or uncomfortable. These are worn to protect the welders from welding flash. 

These safety glasses are now available in various colors. They also come with different coatings. These are used to protect the eyes. They can also help the eyes see in assorted lighting settings. 

Sports Safety Glasses

These are usually made from nylon because they are light and flexible. These can be bended without breaking. However, the nylon frames can get brittle after a while. Making adjustments can also be difficult. 

Safety Lenses 

The lenses are usually constructed from polycarbonate. This material is preferred because it is very strong. The safety lenses have to pass safety standards and tests before they are sold. The safety glasses also have to pass high mass and velocity tests. 

Safety glasses used for welding and other tasks must also pass stringent requirements. The same can be said for safety glasses aimed at preventing caustic liquids from getting to the eyes. 

No matter what safety glasses size you use, make sure it is the correct one for the task. Do not substitute eyeglasses if safety glasses are needed.
