Differentiating Ounces and Grams

Converting Ounces to Grams

Keeping in mind the two different kinds of ounces we have in real life, we can now proceed to convert ounces to grams. Let’s go over the steps to convert an Avoirdupois ounce to grams first. After that we can proceed to converting a Troy ounce next.

Since it will be quite rare when ordinary folks would have to weigh precious metals then the most likely kind of ounce you will ever convert will be an Avoirdupois ounce. To convert ounces to grams multiply the amount in ounces by 28.35. So, for example, when you convert five ounces of liquid to grams, the result of your multiplication will be 141.747616 grams.

Now, in case you were given the interesting opportunity to weigh precious metals then you will have to use Troy ounces instead of Avoirdupois ounces. Remember that a Troy ounce is actually a little bit heavier than what you usually call an ounce in everyday life. A Troy ounce is actually 31.10 grams.

Given that amount in grams, the math goes pretty simple as well. All you have to do is to take your amount in ounces and then multiply it by 31.10, which is the amount in grams for Troy ounces. And then you will have your result in Troy ounces instead of Avoirdupois ounces.
