Jodo Belt Sizes

The jodo belt sizes sold in the United States, Europe and other regions can be confusing. This is due to the varying measuring systems being employed. The following is a general guide that may prove useful.

How Jodo Belts are Measured

In the United States, the most common sizes are size 0, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6 and 7. Size 0 is 79.5"; size 1 is 82", while size 2 is 86.5"; size 3 is 93", while size 4 is 101.5". Size 5 is 113.5" and size 6 is 122.5". Size 7 is 128".

The width of the belts differs as well. Some are 1 ½” width, while others are (1 ¾” width). Colors vary as well. Common colors are black and white. Other colors used are orange, purple, camouflage, blue and more.

The jodo belt size used by some of the jodo schools is 4 to 5 cm wide. The color depends on the grade. When the belt is worn, around 30 cm should project from the side.

Measurements Used in Europe

The jodo belts used in Europe is in centimeters. For US measurements 2, 3, 4, 5, 6 and 7, their equivalents are 88.2, 96, 104, 111.8, 119.7 and 127.6 cm.

Slight variations of these measurements are the following: size 0 (200 cm / 79 in); 1 (220 cm / 86 in), 2 (240 cm / 94 in; 3 (260 cm / 102 in); 4 (280 cm / 110 in); 5 (300 cm / 118in) and 6 (320 cm / 126 in).

Other Jodo Belt Sizes

The various jodo belt manufacturers have led to a proliferation of jodo belt sizes. Other sizes used are 1 ~210 83, 2 ~230 90, 3 ~250 98, 4 ~270 106 and 5 ~290 114. Other US companies are also selling jodo belts in centimeters. Among the most popular sizes are 160. 180, 200, 220, 240, 260, 280, 300, 320 and 340 cm. One is likely to come across other sizes.

340 cm is equal to size 8, while size 7 is equivalent to 320 cm. For size 6 it is 300 cm and size 5.5, 290 cm. For size 5 it is 280 cm; size 4.5 is equal to 270 cm and size 4, 260 cm.

Jodo belt size 3.5 is equal to 250 cm and size 3 is equivalent to 240 cm. Size 2 is the same as 220 cm and size 1 is equal to 200 cm; size 0 is around 180 cm and size 00, 160 cm.

Getting the Right Size

For those new to jodo, getting a belt three times their waistline is ideal. That is, if the waistline is 30”, the belt should be 105” long. The belts sold nowadays come in a wide variety of textures. Also keep in mind the colors and ranking will vary depending on the school.

The jodo belt sizes that you should use are a matter for the teaching school or personal preference. Shopping around and comparing the various belt sizes will be necessary to find the right one.
