Bike pedal sizes rarely vary from the standard 11 x 7 x 2.8 (L x W x D). A few bikes may have larger ones installed, but they are rare. Because the size hardly changes, they are not that important. What is more significant is the pedal type.

Pedal Variants

The pedals you should use depend on your footwear and what type of bike you want to ride. There are basically two kinds of pedals available: the traditional quill pedals and platform pedals. Platform pedals are more versatile. They are also sold in varying widths.

Platform Pedals in Detail

When you use this pedal, the foot is set on a level area. The upper area is flat. Straps and clips can be attached to it. Because of this feature, you can wear flip flops or other footwear. You can do this even when riding on a mountain bike. However, you probably should wear more suitable footwear when on rough terrain. Soft ones will not last. You also have to make sure the clips are durable.

What are Quill Pedals?

These pedals are not as popular as platform pedals, but they are still used. These quills have “cages” where toe clips can be attached. Three variants can be used including track pedals, road pedals and tourist pedals. Bike pedal sizes do not vary much, but these variants do.

The tourist pedal is the widest of the three. The narrowest is the track pedal. The kind of biking that you do determines what pedal to use. If you are just a casual rider or biking for leisure, then try the tourist pedal.

Replacing Pedals

It is possible to replace these pedals. Usually you just need to use a combination wrench. A few bicycles require a long-handled wrench. However, you should not try this if you do not have the know-how. In some bikes the procedure can be difficult.

One of the reasons they are difficult to use is various materials are employed. For instance, soft aluminum crank arms can be damaged. You might also get confused about its threading; it is the opposite of what you are used to. Another reason why pedals are hard to replace is they are wound up tightly.

Usually, there is no need to worry about bike pedal sizes. There are other things that you have to look at such as the tires and frame. There are greater variants there. With pedals, there are few problems.
