The Betsy Ross Story
Many people accept the story the flag was created as ode to Betsy Ross. However, there are revisionists and historians who do not believe that Ross made the flag. Neither do they accept the belief that this is the very first US flag. Based on the story, this flag was created on June 1776.
A group of men including George Ross, Robert Morris and George Washington visited Ross. They talked about creating an American flag. They wanted Ross to make it for them. She accepted their offer. The group presented her with a basic design. She changed it, putting five pointed stars on it instead of the original six pointed ones. The original Betsy Ross flag dimensions are unknown.
Usage
The origin may be in question, but there is no doubt it was used in 1777. The flag was described by Alfred B. Street after General Burgoyne surrendered. Street interpreted the stars to stand for equality among the states. While there is still doubt as to what the first US flag is, there is no question the Ross flag is one of the oldest. It isn’t the oldest in terms of cloth artifact survival.
But it has appeared in more ancient relics. It is depicted in the works of Charles Willson Peale and John Trumbull. In these paintings, the circular stars are shown on seafaring vessels. They provide historical evidence for the flag.
Since that time, the flag has been featured in numerous works of art. It has also been featured in some movies. To this day it remains one of the most enduring symbols of the Revolution. Because of this fact, there are many Betsy Ross flag dimensions that can be bought. Adding to the fascination is the mystery why those colors and stars were chosen.
