20 Gauge Wire Diameter
The 20 gauge wire diameter is 0.0320 inches / 0.812 mm. The wire turn is 31.3 per inch / 12.3 per cm. Its area is 102 mm2. These wire specifications are based on the American wire gauge (AWG).
AWG Specifications and Sizes
Also called the Brown & Sharpe wire gauge, it is the standard wiring measuring system used in the US. It is used for measuring the diameters of electrically conducting, nonferrous, solid and round wire. One of the most important aspects of this system is determining the current capacity of the wire.
The higher the gauge number, the less the diameter is going to be. This is also the case with other gauging techniques that don’t use the metric systems. The system began with the number of operations utilized to generate a wire gauge. For instance, 30 gauge will need several passes in the drawing dies compared to a 0 gauge. The AWG of a stranded wire is obtained by the conductor’s entire cross sectional area.
The electrical resistance is carried here. Because there are gaps in the strands, a solid wire will have a smaller diameter than a stranded wire even if the AWG is the same.
The SWG System
The SWG (Standard Wire Gauge) is the measurement system used in the United Kingdom. If you are going to measure 20 gauge wire diameter with SWG, the results will be in millimeters. The AWG uses inches. AWG and SWG systems differ not just in the measurements.
If joined together in a conversion chart, the range will extend to 56. Today AWG is often used on precious metals, while SWG for measuring the wire thickness of iron-based metals.
Other Information
The gauge denotes the wire thickness or diameter. System usage hinges primarily on the wire manufacturer’s location and preferences. Zeros are the AWG lowest gauges. With metric wiring systems, it is ten times the diameter wire in mm. That is the reason why AWG gauges differ from those in the AWG system.
In metric systems, there is a linear increase instead of a logarithmic decrease. Stranded wires are designated by three numbers: the AWG strand size, the number of strands and AWG dimensions overall. The specifications will vary with other gauging systems.
20 gauge wire diameter, along with others can be obtained in hardware stores. Other specifications like copper resistance, their metric equivalents and fusing current are also available in these stores.
