Air Conditioner Room Size Guide
An air conditioner room size guide can be very useful and also be a money saver. Oftentimes people end buying air conditioning units that are too large. The following information gives you an idea of the capacity required.
Air Conditioning and Room Size
For 100 up to 150 sq ft room, the BTU per hour required is 5,000. For 150 up to 250 it is 6,000 BTU and for 250 up to 300 sq ft it is 7,000 BTU per hour. If the area to be cooled is 300 up to 350 sq ft, the BTU needed is 8,000. For 350 up to 400 sq ft, you need 9,000 BTU. For 400 up to 450, it is 10,000 BTU.
For 450 up to 550 sq ft it is 12,000 BTU and for 700 up to 1,000 sq ft it is 18,000 BTU. If the room to be cooled is between 1,000 up to 1,200 sq ft, you need 21,000 BTU. A 1,200 up to 1,400 sq ft room needs 23,000 BTU. A 24,000 BTU is good for 1,400 up to 1,500. For 1,500 up to 2,000 sq ft, this air conditioner room size guide recommends 30,000 BTU. For 2,000 up to 2,500 sq ft, you need 34,000 BTU.
Size and Cooling Power
A large air conditioning unit does not automatically translate to more cooling power. In fact, over-sized units are less efficient. Some large models don’t conserve energy well either. All air conditioning units take humidity and heat off the atmosphere around it. If the unit is too big, it will cool the room quickly but leave some humidity behind. The end result is a damp atmosphere. A properly sized unit will remove humidity thoroughly.
How to Figure Room Square Footage
For rectangular or square rooms, multiply the width by its length. If the area is triangular, multiply the area length by its width. Divide the result by two. If your room is of another shape, your sales associate can help calculate the size.
You should reduce the BTU capacity by 10% if it is well shaded. But if the room is sunny, add 10% to the capacity. This air conditioner room size guide assumes that only one person uses the room regularly. If more than two people use it, put an extra 600 BTUs for every additional individual.
If the device is going to be used in the kitchen, add 4,000 BTUs for the capacity. This is only applicable to the kitchen, not in other areas.
