How Big is Rockefeller Center?
The size of Rockefeller Center is 22 acres (89,000 m2). It is set between the 51st and 48th streets in New York City. The complex currently has 19 buildings. The complex is located in Midtown Manhattan from 5th to 6th Avenue.
Notable Buildings
One Rockefeller Plaza occupies 608,000 sq ft. Other notable buildings are the International Building North (120,000 sq ft), Palazzo d’Italia (120,000 sq ft), La Maison Francaise (130,000 sq ft) and Radio City Music Hall.
The Underground Concourse
The Concourse consists of pedestrian passages underground. They run from 47th to 51st St and from the 5th to 7th Avenues. The size of Rockefeller Center allows for several businesses to run there. There is a post office, stores and dining places.
There are several ways to reach it. There are stairways from building lobbies, at restaurants and elevators. The Concourse can also be reached via the 47–50th Streets subway station. This is just under 6th Avenue.
Radio City Music Hall
Located at Avenue of the Americas and 50th St, the building was finished on December 1932. At the time, it was the largest theater on the planet. The Hall has a seating capacity of 6,000. It would go on to become one of New York’s biggest tourist attractions. The interior design is a showcase of Art Deco at its best. For several decades it was used for stage shows.
In 1979, the Hall began showing special events and touring performers. One of its most famous shows is the annual Radio City Christmas Spectacular. Some of the artists who had shows there include Ella Fitzgerald and Frank Sinatra. The Tony Awards and Grammy Awards have been held there.
The RCA (GE) Building
The GE building is a 70-floor, 872-foot (266 m) edifice at 30 Rockefeller Plaza. The building used to be known as RCA, but it was renamed GE after the company bought RCA. The popular Rainbow Room club restaurant can be found at the 65th floor.
The 54th to 56th floors cover the Rockefeller family offices. The building is the home of NBC. The majority of the network’s studios are there. Compared to the other towers made at the time, the GE skyscraper was built with a flat top.
The size of Rockefeller Center, not to mention the design has inspired artists and architects all over the world. Created by the Rockefeller family, they have become a national landmark in the US. The national landmark status was conferred in 1987.
