How Big is a Water Heater?
The size of water heaters varies a great deal. A unit with a 2 1/2 gallon capacity can measure 14 x 14 x 10 1/4 inches. Heaters with capacities of 10, 20 and 50 gallons will be much larger.
Types
There are several kinds available, and they each have unique features. The following are some of the most common variants being sold.
Storage Tank Systems
These heat and store the liquid in a tank. This ensures water is available whenever it is needed. When hot water is drawn from the top, cold water goes to the bottom and gets hot. The heating can be done by way of oil, gas or electricity.
When shopping for one, look for those with extra tank insulation so heat is retained more effectively. This also lessens standby heat loss. A heat exchanger allows for better transference of heat
from the energy source to the built-in heat traps. This permits the liquid to flow in the tank regardless of the size of water heaters. However, it keeps hot water from seeping out.
Tankless Systems
Also called instantaneous heaters, these do not employ a storage tank. Instead, water is heated only when necessary. This prevents standby heat loss from the pipes and tank walls. The most fundamental types will have a gas burner or electric element.
These systems are installed where they are needed (i.e., below the kitchen sink). The capacity hinges on the needs. The system may be built to just support that section of the house. Others are built to supply an entire house with hot water.
Integrated Space/Water Heating Systems
These systems fuse a home’s heating needs with their hot water requirements. The initial cost of purchase may be high. But in the long run it is cheaper, especially during the installation. One boiler is typically utilized, needing only a single vent and burner.
These systems use an insulated external storage tank along with a low mass built. This is used for heating the water. This goes through a fan coil.
The apparatus blows heat around the home via a distribution of warm air. In this way, it is similar to a standard furnace. High end boilers are required; otherwise the system will not be effective.
The size of water heaters varies precisely because people have different needs. Before you buy one, make sure to analyze your requirements. No matter what it is, there is bound to be a system that is right for your needs.
