Sizes of Baby Pacifiers
The use of baby pacifiers basically depends on the choice of the parents. Some parents would prefer not to let their babies use pacifiers while others see these as a helpful means to keep the baby happy and quiet – at least for awhile.
If you do decide to let your baby use a pacifier, you should know that there are several sizes of baby pacifiers. These sizes are generally categorized by the baby’s age range.
Sizes of Baby Pacifiers
The available sizes of baby pacifiers depend on the brand of pacifier that you are looking at. Some brands have two basic sizes, others have three. Basically, the specified sizes of baby pacifiers simply indicate 0 to 6 months and 6 months and up; for those with only two options available.
For brands that offer three sizes of baby pacifiers, these will be indicated as follows: 0 to 2 months, 2 months to 6 months; and 6 months and up. You may also find sizes that indicate Newborn instead of 0, which basically means the same thing.
An important thing to remember however, is that no matter what size of pacifier you get; you should check that the shield should at least be one and one-fourth inches wide so the baby will have no incidents of putting the entire pacifier in his mouth.
Basically, pacifier shields are between one and one-fourth inches up to one and one-half inches wide. Also check that the shield has vent holes to allow for air circulation and prevent build-up of saliva as this can irritate the baby’s lips and skin.
Types of Baby Pacifiers
Other than checking for sizes of baby pacifiers, you should also check the material used for the nipple or the teat. There are two basic options for this: silicone or latex.
One factor to consider when choosing whether to go with a silicone teat or a latex teat is to check if your baby is allergic to any of the two.
A silicone teat is more durable but it is also harder. Unless your baby is uncomfortable with a hard teat, a silicone is the better option if you are looking at longevity.
A latex teat is softer but it can wear out easily. This means that you may have to constantly change pacifiers.
Once you have decided which one to get, let your baby try it out and if he doesn’t like what you’ve picked; you may have to get the other type to see if he will like this better.
