What is the size of New Hampshire?

The size of New Hampshire is 9,350 sq mi or 24,217 sq km. It is New Hampshire67 miles (110 km) wide and the length is 190 miles (305 km). Its capital is Concord.

Geographical Information

New Hampshire’s latitude is 42 degrees, 42’ N to 45 degrees, 18’ N. The longitude is 70 degrees, 36’ W to 72 degrees, 33’ W. The water area is 4.1%. Mt. Washington is the highest point at 6,288 ft (1,917 m). The lowest is the Atlantic Ocean (0 ft or 0 m). The mean is 1,000 ft.

There are several rivers around the state. Some of the major ones are the Merrimack River (110 mi / 177 km) and the Connecticut River (410 mi / 660 km). The size of New Hampshire’s lakes varies.

The largest lake is Lake Winnipesauke which measures 71 sq mi (184 sq km). 10 miles off the shore are the Isles of Shoals. According to legend, Blackbeard hid some of his treasures there.

Population

The population estimate as of 2008 is 1,315,809. The density is 146.7sq/mi or 56.65/sq km. The 1790 census showed the population was at 141,885 but grew to 214,460 in 1810. The figure reached 317,976 by 1850.

By 1900, its population was estimated at 411,588. The population reached 533,242 by 1950. The figure reached 920,610 in 1980 and by 1990 had gone up to 1,109,252.

Whites make up 97.5% of the population. Blacks are next with 1.05% and Asians are next at 1.56%. The rest consist of the Native American Indians, Pacific Islanders and other races.

Major Cities

The sizes of New Hampshire’s cities (based on population) are as follows: Manchester is the most heavily populated with 107,006. Next is Nashua with a population of 86,605 followed by Concord with 40,687.

Rochester is at number four with a population of 28,461 and Dover is at five (population 26,884). Derry is the sixth most populated with 22,661. Keene is at the seventh spot with 22,563.

Portsmouth is next with 20,784 followed by Laconia (16,411). Claremont is at number ten with its population of 13,151. Lebanon occupies the 11th spot with 12,568 followed by Somersworth (11,477).

Londonderry is at the 13th spot with a population of 11,417. Berlin is the 14th most populated with 10,331. Exeter is at 15th with 9,759 residents.

The size of New Hampshire’s other major cities are the following: Hampton has a population of 9,126. Durham is at 17th spot with a population of 9,024. Franklin is in 18th place (8,405), Milford is at 19th place with its population of 8,293. Hanover is at the 20th spot with a population of 8,162.

Climate

The southeastern part is marked by wet weather. The northern portions of the state get cooler weather. Snow is experienced throughout New Hampshire. The snowfall varies from 60 in (150 cm) up to 100 in (250 cm). The daytime temperatures range from 70s to 80s F (24 to 27 C). It can fall to the 50s F in the evenings (13 C).
